About Us

HerMamas is...

A little bit about us.....

Irene Quevedo

Irene Quevedo grew up in Inglewood, California. She attended UC Santa Barbara and majored in Sociology and International Studies. Irene joined Hermanas Unidas (HaU) the spring of her freshman year during its inception and was perhaps the loudest of the group! After college, she lived in the Caribbean, found her way home backpacking through Central America and later married her best friend, Diego. Together they have 3 rambunctious children which includes an infant, a toddler and a grade-schooler! She enjoys working out, swimming with her kiddies, hiking, eating and laughing (or "tantruming" depending on the day). Irene loves to write professionally and personally. She is also a successful Program Director at a thriving non-profit! All in all, Irene is a woman LIVING to max-out in all areas of life! Experience the "maxing-out" at HerMamas.com!

Irene's Favorite HaU Memory: It's hard to pick just one favorite memory about HaU! After all, friendships that live on today stem from those very moments, but if I had to choose I'd say one of my favorite memories would have to be attending my 1st introduction meeting. There was really only about 12-15 girls there! I remember witnessing as this group of young women came together to form a sisterhood. Everyone was so excited and bubbly! We were so new to this, to college and living on our own. What I loved most was that I left that meeting and suddenly felt like I found a family! I belonged. I immediately began to write HaU all over the place. Yes, I was tagging HaU (all over my things)! I was a member of this great org. and even if we were just starting out, I was ready to represent for a LIFETIME! HaU-Know!

Elissa Lerma

Elissa grew up in Ventura County, California. In 2001 she earned her degree in Chicana/o Studies and Latin American and Iberian Studies from UC Santa Barbara. While at UCSB Elissa, along with Veronica Burgos and Violeta Coto, founded a chapter of Hermanas Unidas. After graduate school Elissa moved to Riverside County to be with the man she loves. Joey and Elissa were married on the beach in Santa Barbara and they have 2 crazy and beautiful daughters. Sophia is 12 and Louella is 7. Elissa is not only a Mommy, but she is a Human Resources Director and Finance Manager, a photographer, an avid reader, knitter and blogger. You can follow the daily adventures of Elissa and family at PunkRockParents.net

Elissa's Favorite HaU Memory: After spending so much time getting paperwork and all that goes into establishing a chapter of an organization on campus, it was finally time for our first meeting. Vero, Violeta and I met up at the Chicano Studies conference room and we waited. I don't know how long we waited but as each minute passed it was harder to breath. And right before the panic set in people started to show up. It was that first meeting and those first original members who gave me so much hope for what we had created. Today HaU has become a strong force on campus. Along with my marriage and my daughters, HaU will always be one of my greatest accomplishments. Hermanas Unidas continues to be a great source of pride for me.
