I am in my mid-thirties, I have three small children and am a far cry from that young woman who knew all the latest trends and music hits. I listen to the radio, but am often disappointed in its contest. These days Spotify is my source of musical entertainment.
Then, there is also the Disney channel.
My grade-schoolers have turned me on to artists and movies that are all Disney channel productions. Now, this wouldn't be too bad since I am usually with them watching and listening to their favorites: The Descendants, Teen Beach Movie, and Shawn Mendes. However, I now actually jam-out to Shawn Mendes at work and in the car when 90% of the time my kids aren't even around.
While I listened to Shawn the other day on my office computer, I wasn't sure if I should feel utterly self-conscious as a 34-year old mom listening to one of today's tween heartthrobs. Then it hit me, moms are perfect for Disney channel music because they keep it pg-13 while still fun! Moms don't have to worry about f-bombs or resort to annoying toddler tunes to make sure that happens.
Take Shawn Mendes for example. His songs are about believing in your dreams, being the life of the party while taking risks and making mistakes, and of course, he's got a ton of songs about love (but when you listen to these lyrics the love doesn't only apply to a boy loving a girl and vice versa). These "love" tunes can be for parent and child as well as friends. More importantly, the lyrics are often positive.
So the verdict is in: tweens actually shell out music moms and kids can both enjoy. To that point, I say moms should embrace Disney artists or tween music fads. Doing so is a win-win for everyone.
