Strawberry Fields Forever

What is better than great music? Great music with a great message. One of my current favorite bands La Santa Cecilia, recently released their music video for their remake of the Beatles classic "Strawberry Fields Forever". I am sure that when the Beatles performed this song they were not thinking about farm workers, but as children of Mexican immigrant families from California, La Santa Cecilia made the song a new anthem for farm workers. The music video is so sweet and done in gorgeous animation. It also reminds us how our fruits and vegetables get to our tables. It reminds us that there are people out in the strawberry fields, picking the fruit that ends up on our plates.

For me this video fills me with pride and gratitude. First I grew up near Oxnard, California and strawberry fields are a very common landscape. Also my grandparents and even my father were farm workers. They worked out in the fields handpicking fruit. Working hard to give the next generation a better life. I can't even imagine what it must be like to work physical hard labor in the hot sun. Today I work in a beautiful office with air conditioning, with a cushy chair where the most strenuous thing I have to do is take out the trash once a week. Watching this video made me feel so proud of the people in my family!
